On Thursday, January 30th, Davis Malm joined hundreds of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals for the 21st Annual Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid. The Davis Malm contingent was led by associate Courtney Simmons, and included shareholders Chuck DeBevoise, Gary Feldman, Jim Gallagher, Dan Janis, Sandy Moskowitz, and Andrew Myers; Executive Director Keith Buohl; and Director of Marketing and Business Development Joanne Thorud. The firm has participated in the event every year since 2004.

“Justice cannot be achieved without sufficient resources,” said Courtney. “The Walk to the Hill reaffirms the understanding that as lawyers we have a responsibility to promote equal access to the legal system. I’m honored to lead the Davis Malm team and walk alongside like-minded attorneys throughout the Commonwealth.”

The Walk to the Hill, one of the largest lobbying events on Beacon Hill, draws hundreds of lawyers to the State House to request their legislators’ support for civil legal aid funding. This year, the Equal Justice Coalition’s legislative funding campaign called on state lawmakers to provide $29 million in funding for the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) in the Fiscal Year 2021 state budget.

The annual Walk to the Hill event is particularly meaningful to Davis Malm shareholder Sandy Moskowitz, who has served on the Greater Boston Legal Services Board of Directors Executive Committee since 2011. As a former chair of the Equal Justice Coalition and longtime advocate for equal justice, he recognizes the importance of this event. Said Sandy, “Additional state funding is necessary to protect our civil legal aid system and our most vulnerable residents. The Walk to the Hill is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to support funding and the basic legal rights of our neighbors.”

The Walk to the Hill is sponsored by the Equal Justice Coalition, a collaboration of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Boston Bar Association and the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation. The event is co-sponsored by numerous county and specialty bar associations throughout Massachusetts.
